RAILROAD IN THE SKY

Railroad in the Sky is the story of the construction of the Guayaquil and Quito Railway in Ecuador from 1897 to its completion in 1908, and continues until its transfer to the government of Ecuador in 1925. Many had tried to build this difficult road: all had failed. Two brothers from Virginia, Archer and John Harman, accomplished the «impossible» task of connecting the tropical coast of Ecuador with its capital, Quito, high in the Andes mountains. It was the dream and life goal of the charismatic president, Eloy Alfaro, to unite the nation, its people and its commerce, and lead his country into the twentieth century. All three med died in tragic circumstances. It fell to John´s son, the second Archer Harman, to complete this chapter in the fiery history of Ecuador.
